Orbea launches seventh-generation ORCA hill-climbing road bike

July 25, 2023

Orbea has achieved lighter weight and faster climbing speeds on the latest seventh-generation Orca road bike. If you want an aero road bike with extra speed on flat roads, go for the Orca Aero.
Road bikes today basically fall into one of three camps: lightweight, aerodynamic, or a combination of the two. Or bea has studied aerodynamics carefully to understand the weight of weight and aerodynamic advantage. Since they already had the super aero Orca Aero, they decided to refocus the Orca on climbing. Orbea said: "In the case of a 5% slope, a weight reduction of 500 grams can save about 3W; if the slope is increased to 10%, it can save about 6W."

So the new range-topping Orca is focused on delivering "best climbing performance", including instant acceleration response, agile handling, damping and excellent power transfer.
Officially, the top-of-the-line Orbea Orca OMX 53cm frame weighs just 750g, with the new fork weighing in at 360g. Other sizes seem to weigh 680g for a 47cm frame and 850g for the largest 60cm frame. Reducing weight means using less material, and the new Orca is manufactured using Orbea's highest-quality OMX high-modulus carbon fiber.

Orbea first achieved light weight by sticking with more efficient construction and stiffer round tube shapes, and incorporating aerodynamics without adding weight. The new frame removes unnecessary edge molding, eliminating excess resin and non-structural material, while using more complex carbon fiber slices in the layup, reducing excess material overlap. The OMX top frame uses 90 fewer carbon fiber slices than the OMR secondary frame. Then, use lighter hardware (40 grams), lighter paint (25 grams), and lighter varnish (15 grams) to finish the frame.

The second-tier OMR frame weighs 1030 grams, and the fork is 410 grams. The OMR frame is cheaper and can save a lot of budget, which you can invest in frame accessories to reduce weight.
The Orca, while focused on light weight, still has some aerodynamic improvements without compromising frame weight. Using the ICR full internal cable routing system hides the cables while retaining the adjustability of traditional barsets. The Orca is equipped with lightweight bars from Orbea's sub-brand Oquo.
Although the traditional round seatpost is not aerodynamic enough, the well-hidden seatpost clamp is also an aerodynamic design.
The frame geometry has also been tweaked slightly, keeping most of the race-proven data. In the 7 sizes of 47-60cm, all have shortened chainstays for improved acceleration performance, and shortened overall wheelbase for more sensitive handling. Meanwhile, the Orca now has up to 32mm of tire clearance for better grip, handling, ride comfort and lower rolling resistance.
Vehicle Specifications

Pneumatic accessories for individual customization. The lightest top-of-the-line OMX frame comes in 3 colors, while the slightly heavier OMR frame comes in 2 colors. Orbea claims that the weight of the whole series ranges from 6.7 to 7.8 kg, and claims to be the lightest model on the market for each price point.
