BMC has announced the Roadmachine 01 AMP X, its first electric bike to tread the line between road and gravel.

The Roadmachine 01 AMP X is a gravel-adjacent electric bike, designed for endurance riders but also capable of taking to off-road surfaces.

The brand says the Roadmachine 01 AMP X weight only take 12.9kgs because it used the TQ-HPR50 motor system claimed 3.9kgs. Meanwhile, the Roadmachine AMP X offers wider tyre clearance and more endurance-focused geometry than the existing BMC Roadmachine AMP.

The Roadmachine 01 AMP X frame is made of BMC’s top grade 01 carbon fibre and includes full cable integration. The frame geometry has a higher stack, shorter reach and slacker head tube than BMC’s road bikes to cater for the bike’s off-road mandate and to ensure stable handling.

The taller stack height raises the front end of the bike for a more upright riding position, while shorter chainstays 420mm make the bike stiffer and more manoeuvrable, according to the brand.

TQ-HPR50 mid-drive motor

The BMC Roadmachine 01 AMP X is powered by the TQ HPR50 drive unit.TQ claims the mid-drive electric bike motor is the lightest in its class at 3.9kg. It offers a 360Wh battery, and maximum power and torque figures of 300W and 50Nm respectively, putting it in the mid-assist range that’s typical for electric motors on drop bar bikes.

It’s claimed to provide assistance without the kick in and out that some motor systems have and to be significantly quieter than most e-bike motors thanks to TQ’s patented harmonic pin ring, which provides single stage speed reduction, rather than the multi-stage gearing more normal in electric bike motors.

The design also results in around 50 percent of the gear teeth being engaged at one time, so that there’s a larger area transmitting the torque from the motor than with conventionally geared systems, potentially cutting down on wear.

In accordance with electric bike laws, the motor offers assistance up to 45km/h in the US and 25km/h elsewhere.
