Mountain Bike Frame Geometry Explanation

April 12 , 2023

The frame is the main component of the bicycle and is the base of any bike built. The frame influences a bike's weight, strength, longevity, ride quality and price.MTB frames are designed for riding off-road, over rough terrain. When we choose a suitable mountain bike,we need to know what the bike geometry is and whether it can fit you.Today,we will discussion the MTB frames geometry briefly.

Types of MTB frames

There are two main categories of MTB frames: Hardtail and Full suspension .

Hardtail MTB frames

lightweight Hardtail MTB carbon frames

These bikes have a suspension fork in the front to help absorb impact on the front wheel, but the rear of the bike has no suspension. Hardtails are typically less expensive than full-suspension bikes frames and have less maintenance. Most hardtails have the ability to lock out the front fork for times when a fully rigid bike is desired.

XC riders have an important decision to make: choose a hardtail frame for efficient power transfer and light weight or choose a full suspension frame for better stability when descending, better traction when climbing and better comfort.Hardtails can also be at home on all-mountain trails, and the lower cost and easier maintenance make them a solid option for everything except serious lift-serviced downhill trails.

Full suspension MTB frames

The full-suspension frames is for the front fork and rear shock to absorb the impacts of the trail. This drastically reduces the impact on the rider, increases traction, and makes for a more forgiving and enjoyable ride.

You can find  full suspended frames on Enduro MTB bike, Freeride MTB bike and DH MTB bike ,so that riders can push the limits on demanding terrain, for their big-hit ability and their slack frame angles.

The MTB frames material

The MTB frame material take the important role to determin the bike's weight, strength, longevity, ride quality and price.

we can see the most often used material in the bicycle market:Aluminum alloy, steel, titanium and carbon fiber.

Aluminum alloy is the most commonly used material for mountain bike frames. They offer reasonnable performance at a good price: it is light, strong, stiff and has good ride qualities. Aluminium offers good performance characteristics. Aluminium is however percieved to be harsher ride than carbon fibre.

Steel: it was for decades the only frame material available on the market. Indeed, steel frames are is tough, inexpensive and offers a smooth ride, but is relatively heavy for a mountain bike.

Titanium: Titanium frames are light, resistant to corrosion and offer a very good ride quality. However, titanium is an expensive material and is very difficult to work with so Frames are very expensive.

Carbon fiber: Carbon fiber frames is fairly common on cross-country bikes, fat-tire bikes, and high-end trail and all-mountain bikes because of its strength and low weight. Its superlight, very good vibration damping properties, strong and stiff attract more and more riders’ eyes. Carbon fibre frames are comfortable over long distances and very efficient at power transfer. Carbon fibre frame offers the highest performance characteristics of all the frame materials. Carbon frames are today available at lower price points as the technology has matured.
