Dutch government plans to allow 100,000 people to cycle to work by 2025

May 15, 2023

The Dutch government recently launched a new promotional project to encourage people to ditch their cars and ride bicycles for short trips.

According to the "Netherlands News Network" report on the 8th, Dutch Infrastructure Minister Vivienne Heginen launched the project on the same day. She believes that this will not only promote environmental protection, but also benefit people's health. Figures from the Dutch government show that half of all trips by car are less than 7.5 kilometers and a third are less than 5 kilometers. In addition, 7 out of 10 people in the country are willing to ditch their cars for healthier bicycles on short trips.

The Dutch government plans to allow 100,000 people to ride bicycles to work by 2025; by 2027, the total distance traveled by bicycles will increase by 20% compared to 2017. To this end, the Dutch government is preparing to invest 800 million euros (about 6.1 billion yuan) to develop new bicycle lanes, improve road safety, and add more parking spots.
