Disc brake road bike or rim brake road bike, which is best choose?

As we all known, rim brakes and disc brakes are the most common in bike brake design. and disc brakes have been used on mountain bikes for years, but until recently disc brakes were considered too heavy for road bikes. Today, though, road disc brakes are lighter and more compact—and they’re increasingly prevalent on road bikes.

Whether to stick with rim brakes or go with disc brakes has always been a hot topic of debate among riders, with everyone split into two very different camps. The "disc brake party" believes that, in terms of reliability and braking effect, the disc brake system undoubtedly has a huge advantage over the rim brake system. It is not impossible for disc brakes to completely dominate the automotive market. This goes against the trend of technology, and it is not advisable to drive history back! However, the rim brake party is not meant to be conservative. Those who like rim brakes naturally have their own reasons and ideas.

Traditional rim or caliper braking slows the wheel by applying pressure directly to the rim with soft rubber pads, while disc brakes use rotors attached to the hub and calipers attached directly to the frame to slow the wheel speed. Disc brakes are used on cars, motorcycles and almost all off-road bikes, which speaks to their versatility and superior stopping power.

Disc brake or rim brake ,which is best choose?

Traditional rim brakes apply braking force directly to the rim of the wheel itself, which have always been a great option and are still available on many road bikes.

pros

1,Light weight

2,better pneumatic design,

3,mature technology,

4,simpler operation and maintenance.

5,cost lower than disc brake

cons:

1,poor performance in wet conditions or complex terrains especially with carbon rims.

2,brake heat decay

3,Traditional rim brakes are easy to get worn

Disc brakes apply braking force to a rotor (disc) that is mounted on the hub of the wheel.

pros:

1,More stopping power,reliable brake performance

2,Improved braking modulation

3,Ride in any conditions

4,don't worry about brake heat decay

5,solid and reliable barrel shaft structure

cons:

1,maintenance is more complicated than rim brakes.

2,higher cost than rim brakes

In conclusion

Disc brakes on road bikes are good for all road riders, even those who never veer off flat surfaces. But they are especially beneficial for those who live in mountainous or wet areas, enjoy rough roads and gravel, enjoy long rides, or plan to ride in wet or muddy conditions. If you want the lightest braking option you can get or simply prefer the classic look and feel of a traditional road bike, rim brakes are right for you. But disc brakes will give you more versatility and better stopping power in all weather conditions, and they’re a must if you imagine exploring more rugged terrain like gravel or dirt.
